A Monthly Note from Superintendent Scallon
January 31, 2025
Dear Weld RE-4 Families,
You may notice some activity at the District Office in the coming months. To accommodate construction, the majority of our central services staff are temporarily relocating to modular buildings across the district. Funding for this project was provided through the 2022 Bond contingency fund balance (premium, interest, and project savings), and approved by the Bond Oversight Committee in August.
By law, contingency funds have to be used in a defined time period and must be used on capital projects. We have worked to ensure that all of the projects outlined to voters are under contract and progressing as expected before spending program contingency funds. The Bond Oversight Committee also prioritized the use of project contingency funds on direct-student-impact projects first, totaling an estimated $20,600,000.
The District Office building was originally constructed in 1989 with an addition in 2007 provided by bond premium funds. Since the 2007 addition, the district student count has increased by more than 4,500, and the number of central support staff (i.e., instructional support, technology, finance, human resources, etc.) has increased to accommodate those additional students (and buildings). The expansion will provide adequate conditions for staff working to support districtwide functions, as we currently have three staff to an office, and some working out of closets.
Strategic Plan Priority #2
We exist to provide an outstanding education to the residents of our community, which is why our second priority in our 2024 - 2029 Strategic Plan is "EDUCATE: Achieve academic proficiency and Character education to ensure student success.
We believe that our students need both Academic Proficiency and Life Skills in order to educate the whole child. This is encompassed in the work of our Graduate Profile, where every grade level is oriented towards the five skills we look for our graduates to embody: Create, Evaluate, Relate, Advocate, and Participate. All staff support students in this work, preparing them for the world beyond our walls.
We will accomplish this priority by:
- Ensuring a guaranteed and viable curriculum, including intervention and advanced
- Using high impact instructional strategies in every classroom
- Providing ongoing training and professional learning for staff
- Fully implement character education
I have been pleased with the progress we have made in the last few years on moving the needle of academic achievement. I look forward to continuing to leverage those results for future success.
I will share details on the final Strategic Plan priority next month. I would invite you to visit our webpage to learn more about each area and stay connected with our quarterly progress updates.
With Gratitude,
Michelle Scallon Superintendent
